A forward-thinking approach

Our Campus Development and Campus Innovation teams play a key role in improving and developing our campus for students and staff alike. We create value by moulding the fabric of our environment into an increasingly sustainable, digital, efficient and effective place for learning, study and work.

In Campus Development, we are re-imagining our spaces and places, focused on a new strategic Campus Framework. This includes developing longer-term spatial plans and capital priorities, while delivering larger-scale, complex capital build projects, based around a new end-to-end quality assurance process.

Campus Innovation is a multi-disciplinary team that includes Health, Safety & Quality Assurance, Campus Smart and Digital Technology, Sustainability and Business Services. Our focus is on leading the transformation of the University's physical and digital infrastructure to create a world-class campus. All whilst developing and delivering operational sustainability strategies.

It’s often complex and challenging work, balancing the needs of different stakeholders and users. This means we work collaboratively with each other, as well as the University, to deliver creative, cost-effective solutions that meet everyone’s requirements.

More about the Campus Division

Working in Campus Development

We work across a number of different sites, often in exciting and inspiring, multi-disciplinary environments. Our success is built on a strong blend of skills and a desire to constantly increase our knowledge, enabling us to develop, re-design and innovate.

We are helping to transform what is already a globally recognised and successful University. New and often large-scale builds are emerging to sit side-by-side with our more historic, culturally inspiring ‘red brick’ heart. Many are being re-engineered and remoulded to create a truly inspiring campus of the future. This includes working on digitally enhanced learning and teaching spaces, and creating new research and professional service hubs that will be the envy of the UK.

You’ll also enjoy the chance to develop your skills working alongside highly experienced colleagues. These include architects, engineers, project managers, commercial managers, building surveyors, clerks of works and project administrators.

Campus Planning and Design

In this team, our role is to understand all the University’s property needs. This enables us to plan and manage space effectively, and develop a realistic strategy to meet those needs. We’re involved at the earliest stages of all campus projects, advising on relevant options, challenging assumptions and developing a brief.

We cover everything from creating strategies to maintain and refurbish the teaching estate, to managing and updating space planning data. We also create and store 3D building plans and manage the campus project workload, so you’ll find an exciting variety of work.

Campus Property

Join this team and you’ll help us to proactively manage a varied property portfolio that’s constantly changing. You may be helping to manage existing leases and subtenancies, or liaising with the city council on the local plan.

Alternatively, you might be negotiating rent reviews, accurately valuing properties or identifying disposal opportunities. Whatever your role, you’ll be instrumental in developing innovative strategies to enable the University to get the best value from its estate.

Business Services

Collaborating with our Finance, Procurement, and HR partners, the Business Services team plays a crucial role in supporting the Division's essential work. We work closely with heads of service and budget holders to ensure that they retain confidence in their team finances. This involves offering a range of support, from reconciliation to process management and improvement. We constantly seek ways to improve and streamline procedures, adding value to the University.

Our divisional communications plan ensures a professional and dynamic digital presence, providing staff with relevant and inclusive communications and information. We also have a dedicated Administration Manager who oversees the development of our team of Administrators. They sit in teams across the Division, offering an invaluable day-to-day service. Join us and you’ll help to keep the Division moving forward smoothly and successfully, while gaining extensive knowledge of the organisation.

Digital Technologies

The Digital Technologies team liaises between Campus Division and IT Services, as well as supporting various teams with systems projects. We specialise in the management and development of Campus Division specific systems including manage and develop our Integrated Workplace Management System, and our Student Accommodation System. These systems provide a range of services to the Division and the wider University.

The University relies on robust systems. Join this team, and you’ll build your understanding of the complexities of the University’s estate and how it’s managed. At the same time, you’ll have an opportunity to impact its continued improvement and growth.

Health, Safety and Quality Assurance

In this team, we support the whole Campus Division to ensure we mitigate operational risk across all our campuses. Our main aim is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff, as well as students, contractors, and members of the public.

Working collaboratively with heads of service and other key stakeholders such as surveyors and facilities managers, we drive continuous improvement. We also ensure that we comply with all evolving policies, standards and legislation.

Smart Technology

In this team, we use data and smart technologies with an aim to adopt, adapt and extend the capabilities of our campus. We’re involved at the earliest stages of any new building project to ensure that smart systems are integrated into the design. We also review both modern and historic estates to analyse how we can use our buildings in a more effective way.

It’s vital work that gives the University a far better picture of the size, shape and operation of its estate. This enables us to plan for the future with informed, data-driven decisions. Use your IT, engineering and data analytics skills to deliver real value for the University by ensuring it uses buildings intelligently and efficiently.

Sustainability

In this team, you’ll be at the heart of our drive to create a sustainable University and our goal of a net zero carbon campus. We’re involved in a range of activities, from our Carbon Descent planning and implementation, to collaborating with other universities to buy energy collectively in advance. We also work with our science faculties to maximise sustainable energy use, while ensuring our research continues to thrive.

We develop sustainable travel policies and strategies for reusing resources and managing waste contracts. In addition, we have an educational arm to raise awareness of sustainability across the campus. In short, we’re instrumental in guiding the University towards a more sustainable future.
